19 Jun Halle Berry to provide $200,000 annually in child support
The dissolution of a marriage can have a devastating impact on the children. The child often finds it difficult to adjust to a new world in which the parents are no longer living under one roof. It is in the best interest of the child for a couple to part amicably and not fight over child custody or child support. California couples who have been through a divorce understand, however, that family law issues often lead to acrimony.
California residents may have heard that a judge has signed off on a settlement between actress Halle Berry and her former boyfriend, in which Berry agreed to make child support payments of $16,000 every month for their six-year-old daughter. The Oscar winner will be paying close to $200,000 every year in child support payments. She will also be paying her daughter’s tuition. The estranged couple will, however, divide the health expenses.
In addition to child support, the court has also ordered Berry to pay $300,000 and $115,000, which will be used to pay her former boyfriend’s legal costs. The expenses were incurred during their child custody battle in 2012. In the course of the custody dispute, the judge barred Berry from sending their daughter to France.
While considering child custody and support issues, California courts make the welfare of the child the paramount consideration. In making a child support determination, the court will consider the income of both parents. Having an experienced family law attorney on one’s side can help ensure the payment that is ordered will be within one’s means.
